Get to know the A-B-C-Ds of Medicare

Original Medicare includes:
  • Part A Hospital Insurance: For care at hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, some home health care, and hospice services
  • Part B Medical Insurance: For doctor visits, procedures without an overnight hospital stay, and some preventive care
Private insurance companies offer:
  • Part C Medicare Advantage: Combines Parts A & B, and sometimes Part D. Often includes extra benefits NOT included in government-issued Medicare.
  • Part D Prescription Drug Coverage: A stand-alone prescription plan that can be added to Medicare from the government, or to a Part C Medicare Advantage plan.

  • Original Medicare from the government covers around 80% of your expenses. It does NOT include prescription drug coverage.
  • Medicare Advantage plans offered by private insurers provide all the benefits of Original Medicare, often with additional perks like prescription drug coverage and dental, vision, and hearing benefits. Costs are generally more predictable and you may pay less out-of-pocket.

  • Your Initial Medicare Enrollment Period includes your 65th birthday month, plus the 3 months before and 3 months after.
  • Medicare Annual Enrollment Period occurs from Oct. 15 - Dec. 7. You can sign up for, switch, or leave a Medicare Advantage plan.
  • Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period occurs from Jan. 1 - Mar. 31. You can switch Medicare Advantage plans or return to Original Medicare.
  • Special Enrollment Period is for qualifying life events, including losing employer coverage, retiring, and moving. Enrollment timing depends on the situation.
